Amazon Tablet to be launched in August
New device could soon displace the Apple iPad
Following another successful Kindle revision, Amazon is set to leverage its brand to carve out a substantial chunk of the growing tablet PC market.
But what will enable Amazon to grab market share quickly?
Amazon's Content and Services
Amazon will be able to provide several services straight out of the gate with Kindle Store (e-books), Cloud Drive (data storage), Amazon Unbox (streaming video), Amazon MP3 (music), and the newly launched Amazon Appstore. Not only will these services provide a superior user experience, but more importantly for Amazon, they provide multiple revenue streams which could help subsidize the price of the tablet itself.
Amazon Tablet Price Point
Apple's cheapest iPad2 version is selling for $499 and Apple is known for selling its products at a premium. It is conceivable that Amazon will price its new tablet substantially below $500 given the expected initial sales volume of 4 million units in 2011 and Amazon's history of competitively pricing the Kindle.
Amazon Tablet Features
The new tablet will probably use E Ink's Fringe Field Switching LCD technology, which would suggest a color LCD touch panel display. Memory for the base tablet should be in the range of 16GB to 32GB with a possible microSD Card slot for adding additional memory. The most likely operating system for the tablet is the Android 3.0 Honeycomb O/S which supports tablet functionality, similar to Barnes & Nobles Nook Color. Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n is a must have in today's tablet market and Amazon should include this as well.
Amazon Whispernet 3G
While Amazon will most likely include the free Whispernet functionality for browsing and purchasing books, the most interesting question is whether that functionality will be extended to MP3's, movies, and internet access.
